Athletes and Social Media

Today I will be talking about the change between social media use for athletes in the past 10 years.

2005-2014

In this span of time, I think the most used social media platform for athletes was Facebook. At the time, it was the only real social media platform which is why it was used so much. Also, Facebook was the platform everyone else was using at the time and it was the best way to spread content if they wanted to. In the last 6 years of this time span, Twitter also started being used a lot and it was like the up and coming Instagram.

2014-2019

I think that in this span of time it was a combination of Instagram and Facebook that the athletes use. I think that at the start of this period there was a lot of Facebook and not too much Instagram but in the last few years, it became a lot more about Instagram. In the last few years all the people that used to be on Facebook had gotten Instagram and had started using it more and all of the kids were on Instagram and not Facebook so if you wanted kids to see your content you had to post on Facebook. Also in this time span, lots of people used Twitter, I think this was almost the more formal site but also just another platform where people posted.

2019-Present

Now, I think for a good amount of athletes, Facebook has dropped out of the picture. Lots of people still use it and the athletes still have accounts but I don’t think they post to much. Now people use Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok. Instagram and Twitter have always been a thing and YouTube has always been small for athletes (not normal people), but nowadays, lots more athletes have youtube channels and post content about their sport or life. Lots of people have also started to use TikTok, a site where you take a song and you dance or you do something funny and post the short video.

Which site do you think is the best? I think the most fun one is TikTok but the best is Instagram.
